The Question text: What assessment opportunities are available for teacher support in Math Place? Diane Stang, lead author sits at a table with the Math Place product. Diane Stang says: Within Math Place, we have the Assessment Opportunities section which is important because basically this is how we can triangulate our evidence. We’re looking at observations, conversations, and products and teachers are usually very comfortable with doing the products because this is what the kids produce so we’re able to put those in a physical portfolio. But what’s often harder to capture those observations and conversations. So we’ve given direct observations to uncover a misconception that the student may have. And then what we’re doing is we’re giving in the conversations sections direct prompts that the teachers can ask and in a lot of cases we’re giving a potential answer that the kids may give so teachers know how to further probe with the other direct prompts that we’re giving them. This is really important because often we have initial prompts in our pocket but in a lot of cases once we start asking them, we forget where we’re going to go with that, or how we’re going to respond to what students say.
